Description
This song reimagines the iconic poem by Yanka Kupala, the national poet of Belarus — «А хто там ідзе?» (A chto tam idzie? — "And Who Goes There?"). Written in the early 1900s, it speaks of the hard lot of the Belarusian people, and in it, for the first time, an enormous multitude declares out loud what it wants: "to be called human." The Russian writer Maxim Gorky, who translated the poem, prophesied that it "may, for a time, become the national anthem of the Belarusians" — and the prophecy came true quite literally: in December 1917, at the opening of the All-Belarusian Congress in Minsk, a choir sang "A chto tam idzie?" precisely as the Belarusian anthem. (That Congress — the first great national assembly of Belarusians — was soon dispersed by the Bolsheviks; its delegates went on to proclaim Belarusian independence in 1918, the anniversary now marked as Freedom Day.) Today the poem has been translated into more than a hundred languages of the world.
The idea for this track came to me right after watching a film about the difficult fate of Kupala himself — "Kupała". It is more than a biopic: the film shows very well who Belarusians are, and how our great figures fought for our culture a hundred years ago — literally clawing it out of the paws of the communist regime. This film with a powerful national idea was made by our state film studio, Belarusfilm — which then buried it itself. The premiere was due back in 2019, but it was postponed — reportedly out of fear of angering Moscow with a post-colonial film in which Belarus appears as a colony, first of the Russian Empire and then of the Soviet one. After 2020 the film was shelved for good: in 2021 Belarusfilm withdrew it from a London festival two days before the screening. Such are the times. And yet the film, with English subtitles, can be watched, for example, here — I highly recommend it.
The song "A chto tam idzie?" is built as a harsh digital assault: the weight of historical grievance is amplified here by powerful bass and aggressive electro-rhythms. A companion song for Belarusians who have chosen the path of the struggle for freedom.
Lyrics (English translation)
And, say, who goes there? And, say, who goes there?
In such a mighty throng assembled, O declare!
Belarusians!
And what do those lean shoulders bear as load,
Those hands stained dark with blood,
those feet bast-sandal shod?
All their grievance!
And to what place do they this grievance bear,
And whither do they take it to declare?
To the whole world!
And who schooled them thus, many million strong,
Bear their grievance forth,
roused them from slumbers long?
Want and suffering!
And what is it, then, for which so long they pined,
Scorned throughout the years, they, the deaf, the blind?
To be called human!
