Description

A whole layer of Belarusian history and folk memory is bound up with conscription and military duty. In the old days, young men — some with pride, some without — went off to defend the homeland, while their sweethearts stayed behind, waiting for their beloved to return. It is no accident that recruit songs — songs of seeing young men off to long years of army service — became a genre of Belarusian folklore in their own right. And it is exactly such a story, the parting of a young couple, that is told in the Belarusian folk ballad «Bitaja Darožańka» ("The Well-Trodden Road"; the diminutive darozhanka gives the road an affectionate, tender ring).

This song sank into my soul back in my Rakaŭ folk-singing days. It was performed by my older friends from "Hascinets" ("Гасцінец") — the adult folk ensemble of Rakaŭ (as opposed to the children's one, "Vianok"), led by Yelizaveta Stanislavauna Piatrouskaya. I had my share of time in it too — already a teenager, and mostly as a folk dancer (my voice was just breaking, and there was little time left for singing anyway: teenage years, plenty of business outside the choir — well, you know what I mean 😊).

Since 2011, Hascinets has held the honorary state title of "Merited Amateur Ensemble of the Republic of Belarus." And here is what Professor Mikhail Dryneuski — the longtime director of Belarus's National Academic Folk Choir and a true maître of Belarusian folk song — once said about the group:

"There are many different folklore ensembles, but such purity, such great truth, such national essence as Hascinets carries — we shall not find anywhere else… Not everyone is capable of passing on a mother's song so responsibly, so purely, with such a sincere soul. I bow low to you…"

And then one day in 2008, when I was already studying in Minsk, Yelizaveta Stanislavauna — addressing elders by first name and patronymic is our respectful custom — called me and invited me to take part in a staging of this very song: Hascinets had just received the Diploma of the Special Prize of the President of the Republic of Belarus in the "Amateur Art" category and was to perform at the Palace of the Republic, the country's main state concert hall in Minsk, before the president himself and other high officials. And so, for one evening, I returned to Hascinets: to dance a knight's folk dance on the main stage of the country.

"Bitaja Darožańka" — Hascinets, 2008

Back then I did not yet fully understand who that "president" was, nor what consequences his "presidency" would bring in 2020 — for the country, and for me personally. But, as the Belarusian saying goes, you cannot throw a word out of a song — and the same holds for history: it was that very performance of "Bitaja Darožańka," with the long, piercing spoken introduction by Yelizaveta Stanislavauna, that stayed deep in my heart. And this is how Setivir's adaptation of the same name came into the world — one in which a mournful, touching female vocal, Belarusian folk singing, and my beloved dubstep came together in a strange and beautiful mixture. Like the original, this version sounds sorrowful — it is steeped in loneliness and the grief of parting — while the powerful electronic foundation only underlines the lyricism of the piece.

Lyrics (English translation)

In a black pack, foreign invaders have burst into our lands.
Where are you, Belarusian warrior? Answer the call!
Go down the glorious road, the road of struggle!
Go and defend your native land...

The well-trodden road has grown dusty,
Why, dear girl, have you grown so sorrowful?
Why, dear girl, oh, have you grown so sorrowful!
It must be you did not see your beloved off.
It must be you did not see your beloved off!
I saw my beloved off as far as Turaŭ.

And in the town of Turaŭ, and in the town of Turaŭ,
They came to a halt, they came to a halt.
The golden saddles, the golden saddles
Have grown dusty, have grown dusty.
How that whole army, how that whole army
Marvelled, marvelled,
As the well-matched couple, as the well-matched couple
Was parting, was parting.
Was parting, was parting.

It was not a husband with his wife, nor a brother with his sister —
That is how we loved one another, how we were in love.
That is how we loved one another, how we were in love,
Oh, how hard it was for us to part...

The well-trodden road, the well-trodden road,
The well-trodden road, the well-trodden road,
The well-trodden road, the well-trodden road,
The well-trodden road, the well-trodden road.
