Усе беларускія дзеці майго пакаленьня (і ня толькі) ведаюць, хто такі Дзед Барадзед: лялька-вядоўца «Калыханкі» на Беларускім тэлебачаньні майго дзяцінства. Прыдумаў дабрадушнага дзеда — і песеньку для яго — паэт Артур Вольскі ў 1987 годзе, а музыку напісаў кампазытар Леанід Захлеўны, пазьней народны артыст Беларусі і заснавальнік ансамбля «Бяседа». З гэтай знакамітай песенькі «Калыханка» і пачыналася.

«Дзед Барадзед»

«Дзеда Барадзеда» перасьпявалі ня раз — чаго вартая адна толькі метал-вэрсія ад UltraВожыка! — таму было няпроста прыдумаць, што тут яшчэ можна зрабіць. Але ідэя прыйшла сама сабой пры чарговым перачытваньні тэксту. Прыслухайцеся: ён абышоў белы сьвет, можа ўсё, будзе з вамі побач усюды і нават ведае, што вы бачыце ўва сьне. Уявіце сабе такога касьмічнага вандроўніка — магутнага і памяркоўнага, шчырага іншапланетніка, добрага «дзеда зораў», адвечнага апекуна чалавецтва, які прыглядае за кожным з нас. Гэты вобраз моцна засеў у галаве, і я вырашыў зрабіць для такога героя песьню адпаведнага настрою і гучаньня.

Так у трэку «Хто я...» мяккі вакал, натхнёныя космасам мелодыі і лёгкі налёт кібэрпанк-атмасфэры зьліваюцца ў цёплы, узьнёслы твор, які нібы нясе цябе праз сузор'і разам з найлепшым сябрам — задаючы самае простае і самае глыбокае пытаньне: хто я? У дзяцінстве адказ мы ведалі 😊

Every Belarusian child of my generation (and not only mine) knows who Dzied Baradzied is (Дзед Барадзед — roughly "Old Man Beardybeard," a playful blend of the Belarusian words for "beard" and "grandpa"): the puppet host of «Калыханка» (Kalykhanka, "The Lullaby"), the bedtime show on Belarusian television in the days of my childhood. The show's famous closing lullaby has already sounded in this gallery — and it opened with the little song of Dzied Baradzied himself. Both the good-natured old man and his song were dreamed up in 1987 by the poet Artur Volski; the music was written by the composer Leanid Zakhleuny, later a People's Artist of Belarus and the founder of the folk-music ensemble Biasieda.

Dzied Baradzied

Dzied Baradzied has been covered more than once — the metal version by UltraVozhyk (literally "UltraHedgehog") alone is worth hearing! — so it was not easy to think of anything new to do here. But the idea arrived on its own during yet another rereading of the lyrics. Listen closely: he has walked the whole wide world, he can do anything, he will be by your side everywhere, and he even knows what you see in your dreams. Now imagine such a cosmic wanderer — mighty yet pamiarkoŭny (a famously untranslatable Belarusian word for a mild, patient, easygoing temper, which Belarusians half-jokingly consider their defining national trait), a sincere extraterrestrial, a kind "grandfather of the stars," the eternal guardian of humanity who watches over each of us. The image stuck in my head, and I decided this character deserved a song to match his mood and sound.

And so, in the track "Chto ja..." ("Who Am I..." — the question that opens the refrain of the original song, and which the refrain answers at once), soft vocals, space-inspired melodies, and a light touch of cyberpunk atmosphere merge into a warm, uplifting piece that seems to carry you through the constellations beside your best friend, asking the simplest and deepest of questions: who am I? In childhood, we knew the answer 😊
