Description

"Lacieli" — a track based on the Belarusian folk song "Oj, liacieli husi" ("Oh, Geese Were Flying")

"Lacieli" simply means "(they) were flying" — the geese of the song's opening line.

After lyrics of my own and after Kupala, this is a step deeper still — down to the bedrock: a folk song. "Oj, liacieli husi" runs on age-old Slavic imagery. Geese arrive from a faraway land, and the "quiet Danube" is not a literal setting but an archetype: the border river, the boundary between one's own world and the other one. (Belarus, for the record, is nowhere near the actual Danube — which is exactly the point: in East Slavic folk songs, "Danube" names the mythic river, wherever the singer happens to live.) A dark cloud and a fine drizzle stand for sorrow and the long afterglow of parting; the mother who "doesn't know yet" hints at a secret courtship. The lovers are close "like swallows u strese" — which to a modern eye reads as swallows having a nervous breakdown, but no bird is stressed here: a strecha is a thatched roof, and swallows nest under its eaves — an old image of warm domestic intimacy. An intimacy that will later dissolve "like fog in the forest." The song is performed as an intimate duet: female and male vocals alternate, turning the piece into a dialogue between two lovers — whose story does not end well.

So why did I want to give folklore a new sound in the first place? Let me start from afar. As I've mentioned before, for about nine years I sang in the folk ensembles of Rakaŭ, a small historic town just west of Minsk — mainly in the children's ensemble "Vianok" ("The Wreath"). It was not just an ensemble; it was the whole subculture of my childhood. Thanks to our director, Lizaveta Stanislavaŭna Piatroŭskaja (addressing a teacher by name and patronymic is the respectful default here), "Vianok" kept coming out on top; we toured Belarusian towns and villages a lot, and sometimes went abroad. Volkersdorf near Dresden — and all of Saxony — will stay in my heart forever: I still love visiting the places where whole months of my childhood were spent. Thanks to the choir 😊

At one point I even took first place among young soloists at Berahinia — the national festival of folklore art, named after a female guardian spirit of Slavic lore, which every two years gathers tradition-bearers from all over Belarus. First place — together with my classmate Tania, while Vianok took the festival's Grand Prix! Back then, it seems, I really could sing a little — but soon my voice broke, so nowadays I use AI (kidding!) Well into adulthood, I kept recalling the songs we sang as kids. Some of them I would still hear live — at Kupalle (the midsummer-night festival, with bonfires and wreaths set afloat on the river), at the spring-calling rite of hukannie viasny (when spring is quite literally sung into coming), at other Belarusian folk holidays. But far from all of them. At some point I wanted to bring them back — first into my own head, and then into a new sound: the kind you could drop into a Spotify playlist and enjoy every single day. That is how my first adaptation of Belarusian folk art came to be — the track "Lacieli."

Lyrics (English translation)

Oh, geese came flying
From a faraway land,
They troubled the water
On the quiet Danube.

May those geese be lost then,
Perish all for nothing,
Just as we once loved
And now love no more.

And we loved each other
Like swallows under the eaves;
Now we have parted
Like mist through the forest.

When we loved each other,
Mother did not yet know;
Now we have parted
Like a dark cloud.

From that dark cloud
A fine drizzle will come;
From this love of ours
Nothing will come.

Oh, geese came flying
From a faraway land,
They troubled the water
On the quiet Danube.
