Description

«Mova-Maci» ("The Mother Tongue", literally "Language-Mother") is a musical adaptation of the poem «Нанова!» (Nanova! — "Anew!") by Ryhor Baradulin, which the poet wrote especially for the opening of the "Mova Nanova" ("Language Anew") Belarusian-language courses in 2014. The poem has since become their unofficial anthem. Baradulin (1935–2014) was the People's Poet of Belarus — the last ever to be honoured with that title — and this poem became one of his final works: he passed away just weeks after the courses opened. In Wrocław, where I live, one of the largest branches of the courses is active — "Mova Nanova Wrocław", the same community through which Nasta Kudasava's poem once found me. Every summer a big event takes place here — the closing of the season: a true festival with musicians, dancing, and a bonfire. And in 2026, an invitation came my way: to make something like an anthem for the coming season's closing. The anthem, in essence, already existed — all that remained was to give it music.

Belarusian is the language most citizens name as native, yet daily life, schooling and officialdom run overwhelmingly in Russian after two centuries of imperial and Soviet russification, and UNESCO lists Belarusian as vulnerable. Choosing to speak it is therefore a conscious act — hence an entire genre of Belarusian poetry devoted to the "mova" ("language"), of which this is a late, luminous example.

Not an easy task, and a deeply responsible one: Ryhor Baradulin is one of the poets I respect most, a man who made an enormous contribution to the Belarusian language and culture. But I wanted to try all the same. I spent a long time shaping the prompt so that it would be epic and grand, with a touch of the cinematic and of great cathedral choirs — in a word, EPIC!

And it seems to have worked. A whisper. An organ. A choir. Sub-bass. A dubstep drop. Drum-and-bass energy. The Belarusian word sounds here like a ritual in a cyber-cathedral — sacred, powerful, and alive. This is not tender nostalgia, but a return at full volume. Inevitable. Healing. Anew.

Lyrics (English translation)

Inevitably... Healingly... Anew...
the heartfelt word unfolds.
The mother tongue — a holy wellspring —
turns our intentions back to the headwaters.

Like lofty daydreams, the clouds...
the sky's thoughts rescue us from the swelter...

We in this world are duty-bound:
to nurture the language of our native Fatherland!
Inevitably, Healingly, Anew —
the heartfelt word unfolds!

We in this world are duty-bound:
to nurture the language of our native Fatherland!
Inevitably, Healingly, Anew —
the heartfelt word unfolds!

The mother tongue...
A holy wellspring... Anew...
