Нават guslee.bel ацаніў!

Description

"Mužyk-Biełarus" — a song set to Yanka Kupala's poem "Ja muzhyk-bielarus..."

A "muzhyk" is a peasant man — more on that word in a moment. The poem's opening line, which gives the song its name, says: "I am a muzhyk, a Belarusian." And Yanka Kupala (1882–1942) is the national poet of Belarus — roughly what Shevchenko is to Ukrainians or Burns to Scots.

This time it's Kupala and one of his very earliest poems, "Ja muzhyk-bielarus..." (1905–1907). "Muzhyk" here is not a put-down but a class: the peasant. A "pan" is a landowner, a lord — the honorific of the gentry across the former Polish–Lithuanian lands. So when the hero of the poem calls himself "the pan of the sokha and the scythe" (a sokha is a primitive wooden plough), the irony is bitter: his entire lordship amounts to a wooden plough and a scythe — and nothing else.

The imagery speaks for itself. Hunger is the hero's "father," misery his "mother," and only hard labour gave him strength. He feeds the world bread while eating chaff himself; with his own hands he turns impassable forest into a field "flat as a pancake." "Dark myself, moustache white" — that is both a face burnt by the sun and an enforced darkness of the mind: in Belarusian, as in other Slavic languages, "dark" also means unlettered, kept from learning. Kupala says it outright at the end — had the hero been able to read books, "I would have won a better lot." And the refrain is about dignity and awakening: despite the contempt and the forced silence ("I must stay deaf and mute"), the hero insists — "I, too, am a human being," however worn down by a lifetime of hardship.

To my mind, the poem paints a very precise picture of how the Belarusian peasant lived in the early twentieth century, when Belarus was part of the Russian Empire. Serfdom had been abolished almost half a century earlier, in 1861 — and yet, as you can see, life had barely changed. Some will find parallels with the present day, too (hence the cover art).

Now, where the song itself came from. The inspiration arrived through my admiration for the guslee.bel project — to my taste, the best rap ever made on Belarusian poems 😎

After listening to guslee.bel on repeat, I stumbled upon a snippet where he recites a few lines from "Ja muzhyk-bielarus...". The snippet was already two years old by then, and no full version had ever appeared. I wrote to the author asking whether it was worth waiting for one — and that same night decided to try generating the track myself. To my surprise, the final version came together in literally a few generations — and turned out rather decent. Even guslee.bel approved!

in Belarusian > Me: > - Will we ever get the full version? :) > guslee.bel: > - After listening to Setivir, there’s almost no point anymore :)

P.S. In the style prompt, you may notice the word "Russian." This little "hack" used to help the model understand that the sound should stay close to Slavic: like it or not, there is far more Russian music in the training data than Belarusian, so earlier model versions simply worked better with tricks like that.

Пан сахі і касы;

Мушу быць глух і нем;

Вокам нельга прабіць;

Lyrics (English translation)

I am a muzhyk, a Belarusian,
The pan of the sokha and the scythe;
Dark myself, moustache white,
My hair two hand-spans long.
Hunger was my father —
He raised me and he fed me;
Misery was my mother,
And labour gave me strength.

Though I endure contempt,
I must stay deaf and mute;
Though I feed the world with bread,
I myself eat the chaff.
From my hard labour
Everyone profits —
Only I, for all of it,
Get no thanks anywhere.

Look — a pine wood, tall,
No eye can pierce it through;
My axe rang out — and now
The field lies flat as a pancake.
I dragged the sokha from the loft,
Hitched up my little mare,
Bent my shoulders just a bit —
And turned the forest into ploughland!

Then I sowed my patch,
With my wife I reaped it...
And this pan laid up a stack
Of wheat — a lovely sight!

So there, good people — that is
The muzhyk-Belarusian I am!
Bruises beneath my brow,
Dark myself, moustache white.
Eh, had I not been dark,
Had I known how to read —
I would have won a better lot,
I would have sung my little songs!

I would have found the words to say
That I, too, am a human being —
That I, too, am sick and tired
Of toiling my whole life away.
