Description

"Rano-rano" — a folk ballad in a new sound

"Rano-rano" means "early, early in the morning" — a classic opening formula of Belarusian folk songs.

After "Liacieli," here is another folk song — but of an entirely different kind: not the quiet lyricism of parting, but a dark ballad. Once there lived a young lad, so poor that he had no means to marry the girl he loved. His entire wealth was one faithful horse: a companion, a helper in his labour, and freedom itself. In despair, the lad strikes a bargain with a witch — a Faustian deal, village edition: he gives up the horse, and in return receives gold, a fine house, and a beautiful wife. It would seem everything had come true. But what he has gained cannot heal what he has lost: the horse carried his soul, was a true friend — and without him, all the riches feel empty.

The song grows out of the old peasant world, where land and household determined a person's fate. A horse there was never merely an animal: it pulled the plough and the cart — the difference between bread and hunger — and it was the master's sacred companion, bound up with dignity, with love, with life itself. To sell your horse was to sell a part of yourself. That is why the bargain with the witch here is not just a fairy-tale device — it is a genuine tragedy.

This is one of the songs we used to sing in my childhood — back in the folk-ensemble days you may remember from the previous track's story — and it stayed lodged in my head for years. Now I have given it a new sound: dubstep. Yes, you read that right — an old ballad about a horse and a witch, and bass drops. I hope that in this form it will lodge itself in your head too 😎

Lyrics (English translation)

Oh, early, early,
The sun came up,
The sun came up so fair.
The sun came up —
But in my eyes
The dark, dark night
In broad daylight.

The dark, dark night:
My darling girl
Will not marry me.
She will not marry —
Because I have
Neither stake nor yard to my name.

Nothing at all,
Nothing but a horse,
Nothing but one faithful horse.

I saddled the horse
And through the dark wood
I rode to the old witch,
To the old witch...
And she says to me:
"Gold I will give you for your horse."

And now I have
The finest house in the village,
A yard full of goods,
A beautiful wife.
A beautiful wife —
And no good at all.
My horse, oh my horse,
I sold you away...
