Setivir

Sync.so

Description

"Rodny Fłoŭ" — the track that started Setivir

"Rodny" is Belarusian for "native" — the same word used in "rodnaja mova" (native tongue), and "rodny kraj" (native land). So the title reads, roughly, as Native Flow.

In the beginning, there was heavy music in German. Within my project DunkelSaga, I had long been generating tracks about the most striking events of the Lord of the Rings universe. But alongside it, a very different desire was ripening in me: to write a rap track of my own in Belarusian (rap has been a long and sincere love of mine) and to perform it myself.

The lyrics took about two weeks to write — almost entirely without AI: a model would only occasionally suggest a rhyme, filling in for a rhyming dictionary. Then I picked up a microphone and tried to sing it myself. You can hear how that went — laughing is allowed. My best friend (hi, Roma!) half-joked afterwards that he had understood everything that was in Belarusian, while the rest sounded like some unknown tongue.

That first version of the song was a dialogue between two Belarusians — one speaking Belarusian, the other Russian, which, after centuries of Russification, is what most people in Belarus speak in everyday life. The first was trying to convince the second that the language matters. But after that review, I decided to rebuild the track completely: to thread it through and through with references to Belarusian culture, so that a listener would want to untangle every one of them. Also I made it whole on Belarusian language. And it had to sound good — that is, definitely not in my voice 😁

With the lyrics rewritten, one evening I thought: "What if AI has finally learned to sing in Belarusian?" I had tried more than once to generate Belarusian-language tracks alongside DunkelSaga, and the results were nothing to celebrate — Belarusian is hardly a priority language for AI companies, and you could hear it. But just then a new version of Suno came out — 4.5+. I fed it my lyrics, and from the very first generation I understood: now it could. It was pure delight. Somewhere around generation 55, I found the one: a version whose sound I loved, with only a handful of rough spots — later fixed by regenerating individual sections and a bit of light post-production.

Around the same time, Google released Veo 3 — the first genuinely decent video-generation model. With its help, plus a couple of other inexpensive services, I made a music video. Today, frankly, it looks rather dated; but back then, considering how much time and money had gone into it (not much), it felt like a small miracle. There is also a separate behind-the-scenes video about how the song and the clip were made (in Belarusian).

That is how "Rodny Fłoŭ" was born — out of the desire to give life to lyrics of your own when you don't have a decent voice of your own, and there's no money for professionals. Of course, it's far from a flawless piece: most likely, you will hear the AI in it. But back then, I simply couldn't believe this was possible in Belarusian at all. And if you ask me, the track still holds up — certainly better than half of Belarus's "classic" estrada, the glossy Soviet-rooted variety pop that has ruled the official stage for decades 😁

P.S. The lyrics hide more than the obvious nods to people, events, and history. There are also references to specific works by Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas (the founding classics of modern Belarusian literature), Uladzimir Karatkievich (the novelist who gave Belarusians a romantic vision of their own past), Vasil Bykaŭ (the unflinching chronicler of World War II, and internationally the best-known Belarusian writer), and Siarhei Hrakhouski (a poet who survived Stalin's camps and lived to write about them).

Lyrics (English translation)

Hey, listen up — this is your native flow:
Have you forgotten it? It's been yours from your great-grandfathers, from time out of mind.
You hear our language? Now that is style.
It's a treasure we won't lose — not on any terms.

For honour, for truth, for the native corner we hold so dear —
The one we've long had no strength in us to forget.
Kupala and Kolas have long been running in our veins,
So this spirit of ours, galactic in scale, is not going anywhere.

Listen, kid, I understand your pain —
You're thinking: no need to dive into all this head-first.
Fine, you can let a love go up in smoke, drop a road once travelled,
But to love the Homeland you've got to know your roots inside out.

You need to know who they are: Karatkievich, Krapiva,
Radzivil, Skaryna, Vitaut, Euphrosyne of Polatsk,
Rahvalod and Rahnieda — and how Uladzimir slept with her,
And why Iziaslau stood up to shield his mother.

Hey, listen up — this is your native flow:
Have you forgotten it? It's been yours from your great-grandfathers, from time out of mind.
You hear our language? Now that is style.
It's a treasure we won't lose — not on any terms.

Now then, let's talk about the art of today —
You've surely heard it: you've been hooked since your teens.
Chances are you rate the rap vibes of Maks Korzh —
But did you know he started out in the Luninets underground?

Back then he rapped in the mova and took real pride in it,
Partied in fine style with the white-red-white flag.
Once upon a time he didn't shy away from his Belarusianness one bit —
If he ever hears this, let him remember his roots.

And by now, I hope, you've caught my reproach:
Who the Belarusians are, and why the wild thyme is fragrant;
Who NRM are, and Bashlykevich, and Khadanovich,
And what the old-new Martsinovich writes about in his books.

Where that vyraj lies — the one that nobody else has got;
What that fine yellow sand is, and where the road is leading.
"Violence" and "Pigs" by Charnukha — that is our reality,
And Filipenka has told the world well what we truly are.

Hey, listen up — this is your native flow:
Have you forgotten it? It's been yours from your great-grandfathers, from time out of mind.
You hear our language? Now that is style.
It's a treasure we won't lose — not on any terms.

Our language opens up the roads into our history —
And no mighty oak was ever grown on shallow roots.
Remember how our forebears defended their own doorstep,
How through torment they won the white banner of victories.

How the red of blood came to lie upon that banner,
And why to this day it frightens the tutejšyja princes.
And once you have read of all this in your own native word,
You will understand what it means to bear the name of a worthy Belarusian.
